2017 Ford F-150 Review

Introduction

Shoppers pretty much want everything from their full-size light-duty trucks these days. You want your new truck to be comfortable, have the most modern tech on the inside, get impressive fuel economy and, oh yeah, do all that truck stuff, too, like hauling cords of firewood and towing an Airstream travel trailer. It's easy to take all of this capability for granted, but the 2017 Ford F-150 is a perfect example of that kind of modern truck.

The latest generation F-150 offers all the performance you need along with a refined modern touch. It has neat tricks up its sleeve such as the Pro Trailer Backup Assist system, which allows you to control the direction of your trailer with a simple dashboard mounted knob. There's also the F-150's impressively quick Sync 3 infotainment system, a quiet cabin, and all the available luxury amenities you could ask for, such as ventilated seats and power deployable running boards. Aluminum body panels and an aluminum bed (rather than traditional steel) help make the F-150 the lightest truck in its class, too.

This year's 2017 F-150 also gets a few updates worth noting. The big news is the redesigned version of the top-of-the-line turbocharged 3.5-liter engine that's hooked up to a brand-new 10-speed automatic transmission. Yes, 10. It sounds like overkill, but it helps improve fuel economy and it provides an ideal gear ratio for just about any towing scenario. To top off the changes, Ford has brought back one of the baddest off-road trucks out there, the F-150 Raptor. It's wider and significantly more powerful than the standard F-150 and comes with an upgraded suspension, heavy-duty skid plates and tons of character. Head out to open desert terrain in a Raptor, and you're going to feel as if you're driving your own personal Baja-race trophy truck.

Although the F-150 is an outstanding truck, that doesn't mean it's the only full-size truck we'd recommend. The 2017 Ram 1500 is one of our favorites thanks in part to its excellent ride quality and impressive available diesel engine. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (and its GMC Sierra 1500 twin) are lifelong rivals to the F-150 that offer quiet and well-appointed cabins along with multiple powerful engines to choose from. As for the Raptor, it's in a class by itself, though the stylized Ram 1500 Rebel and rock-crawling Ram 2500 Power Wagon could be worth a look.

Clearly, if you're shopping for a full-size truck, there are a number of excellent choices. But even among all that stiff competition, the 2017 Ford F-150 is still one of our favorite trucks on the road. It should be right near the top of your consideration list.

What's New

The 2017 Ford F-150 gets several major updates. Ford has redesigned the optional turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine and paired it up with a new 10-speed transmission. The new engine and transmission, both of which were among the best in class already, deliver better fuel economy while packing more horsepower and torque than before. The off-road-oriented Raptor model also returns this year with a high-output version of the 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine.

Body

The 2017 Ford F-150 is a full-size pickup truck that is available in three cab styles: regular, SuperCab (extended) and SuperCrew (crew cab). There are three bed lengths offered, depending on which cab style is chosen: a 6.5- or 8-foot bed is available on regular and SuperCabs, and the SuperCrew is eligible only for a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed. Finally, there are seven trim levels to choose from: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited and Raptor.

Standard features for the base XL include 17-inch steel wheels, trailer sway control, pre-wired trailer connections, vinyl flooring, a cloth-upholstered 40/20/40-split front bench, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a driver information display, air-conditioning, manual crank windows, a 4.2-inch central display screen, Bluetooth, and a four-speaker radio with auxiliary input. SuperCab and SuperCrew models receive 60/40-split folding rear seats and two additional speakers.

An optional 101A package adds power windows and locks (including the tailgate), power mirrors, a cargo management system with four tie-down cleats, remote keyless entry, cruise control, Ford's MyKey vehicle control feature, a bigger driver information screen, Sync voice controls, smartphone app integration, a USB port and a CD player.

Other XL add-ons include chrome and sport appearance packages, the FX4 Off-Road package, side steps, a tailgate assist step, drop-in or spray-in bedliners, and trailer tow packages with Ford's Pro Trailer Backup Assist system (essentially a self-steering system to simplify backing up with a trailer).

The XLT trim includes the XL's optional 101A package along with alloy wheels, chrome bumpers and exterior trim, foglights, a keypad entry system (with keyless entry and ignition), rear privacy glass, carpeting, four-way-adjustable headrests, manual driver and passenger lumbar adjustments, and additional interior storage bins and pockets.

For the XLT, there are a few options. The Mid 301A option package adds heated mirrors, an auto-dimming driver-side and rearview mirror, a trailer hitch, an eight-way power driver seat, power-adjustable pedals, rear under-seat storage, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a rearview camera and a seven-speaker sound system with satellite radio. The Luxury 302A package includes those items along with a power-sliding rear window, rear parking sensors, LED bed lighting, remote ignition, 10-way power-adjustable, heated front seats, a 110-volt power outlet, an 8-inch touchscreen (with Sync 3, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and two USB ports. Notable standalone options include a tailgate step, a regular sunroof (SuperCab), a panoramic sunroof (SuperCrew), blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, remote vehicle tracking, inflatable rear seat belts and a navigation system.

When you step up to the F-150 Lariat many of the XLT's Luxury 302A features come standard. You also get 18-inch wheels, front tow hooks, power-folding mirrors, an 8-inch driver information display with expanded capabilities, dual-zone automatic climate control, driver memory settings, leather upholstery and ventilated front seats.

In addition to many of the options offered on the XLT, the Lariat is also eligible for the Mid 501A package and Luxury 502A packages. The Mid 501A package includes a remote tailgate release and front-facing spotlights, while the Luxury 502A package adds LED headlights and taillights, automatic high beams, automatic wipers, a heated, power-adjustable steering wheel, front bucket seats, heated rear outboard seats (SuperCrew), an 11-speaker Sony audio system, a navigation system and Sync Connect. Other options include lane departure warning, a surround-view camera system, an automated parallel-parking system, and adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning.

The King Ranch trim is only offered as a SuperCrew and builds on the Luxury 502A package with a Western styling theme inside and out. With a bit more conventional luxury equipment, the Platinum trim adds 20-inch wheels, power-deployable running boards and aluminum interior trim. Essentially at the top of the range is the F-150 Limited, which comes with 22-inch wheels, wood interior trim, unique styling details and many of the F-150's optional features as standard.

The off-road-focused F-150 Raptor starts out with a feature set similar to the XLT's but gets a reinforced frame; a special four-wheel-drive system; a modified, long-travel suspension; flared fenders; skid plates; 17-inch wheels and upgraded off-road tires; and special interior trim with leather and cloth upholstery. The Raptor is available with many of the same options packages you can get with the XLT and Lariat as well as a few exterior styling packages, a Torsen limited-slip front differential and forged, bead-lock capable wheels.

Interior

As with most full-size pickup trucks available today, the 2017 F-150 comes in a wide variety of trims. The base XL is largely stripped of creature comforts and has vinyl floors and hand-cranked windows, but that's right in line with work-truck competitors. At the top of the ladder, trim levels such as the Lariat offer a downright luxurious cabin, with all sorts of modern available tech. There's still an abundance of hard yet sturdy plastics, but most every surface that you'd frequently touch is padded.

The newest Sync 3 system from Ford is probably one of the biggest improvements the F-150 has seen lately. It has highly legible font and easy-to-understand controls, and it isn't nearly as susceptible to glitches or failures as the previous MyFord Touch system. What's more, the dashboard layout and buttons are likable too. Most of the buttons and knobs in the F-150's cabin feel sturdy, and everything is big enough to control even if you're wearing winter gloves.

For long highway journeys, the higher-trimmed F-150s offer a great balance between utilitarian and comfortable. The ride is generally smooth (a close second to the cushy suspension in the Ram 1500), and the cabin is pretty quiet at speed. Avoid the optional towing mirrors if you can, though — they make for quite a bit of road noise that's nearly impossible to drown out.

Throughout the cabin, there is plenty of storage for personal items, especially in trucks with the front bucket seats and massive center console. SuperCab and SuperCrew models also benefit from additional storage under the rear seats.

Powertrain

The 2017 Ford F-150's base engine is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 282 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. It comes paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This combination can achieve 20 mpg in combined city/highway driving, and maximum towing capacity is 7,600 pounds.

The first of three optional engines is a turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 that increases output to 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque. The 2.7-liter is also paired with a six-speed automatic. We've subjected a few different F-150s equipped with this engine to our performance tests; expect a 0-60 mph time of around 6.3 seconds, an impressive result for a light-duty truck. This engine is rated at 22 mpg combined and can tow as much as 8,500 pounds.

Although the 5.0-liter V8 isn't turbocharged, it's a tried-and-true choice for both its towing prowess and fuel economy that is attainable in the real world. This one produces 385 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque and comes with the six-speed automatic. In Edmunds testing, a V8-powered 4WD SuperCrew reached 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. Rated fuel economy is 18 mpg combined, and towing capacity tops out at 11,100 pounds.

Atop of the heap you'll find the redesigned 3.5-liter turbocharged V6, which is now good for 375 hp and a stout 470 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with the new 10-speed automatic transmission. This very capable and well-rounded combination is rated at 21 mpg combined, and properly equipped versions can tow up to 12,200 pounds.

Of course the four-wheel-drive versions are rated 1 or 2 mpg lower, and the top three engines are available with an optional heavy payload package that saps another mpg or two.

Meanwhile, the Raptor is powered by a high-output version of the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that belts out 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Only available with the 10-speed automatic transmission, it consumes fuel at the rate of 16 mpg in combined driving. Towing is not its strong suit, however, due to its highly optimized off-road suspension.

The Raptor's standard four-wheel-drive system has a driver-adjustable terrain management system that offers six different modes (Normal, Street, Weather, Mud and Sand, Baja and Rock Crawling) used to alter the truck's engine, transmission, traction control and brake systems according to terrain. Weather mode, for example, calibrates the Raptor for rain, snow and ice, while Baja can be used for high-speed desert running.

Driving

It might be a full-size pickup, but the F-150 feels relatively nimble. The lightweight aluminum body probably contributes to this, but it also has to do with the plentiful power coming from all three optional engines. As a result, the F-150 gets up to speed on the highway with ease, feeling a bit less cumbersome than some competitors. Rearview and surround-view cameras make backing into a tight parking spot a stress-free affair, while the nifty Pro Trailer Backup Assist system even takes the guesswork out of backing a trailer.

Though we don't think the F-150 has the best ride comfort on the market (that praise probably goes to the Ram 1500 thanks to its coil-spring rear suspension), it's totally livable on the highway. Small and large bumps alike are soaked up easily, and the seats are comfortable even on long journeys. Running boards and the low-hanging front air dam limit off-road clearance, but the air dam is easily removable and power-deployable steps are available.

We haven't been able to exhaustively test the new turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 or its 10-speed automatic just yet, but the initial driving experiences we’ve had were extremely encouraging. The thoroughly redesigned twin-turbo V6 feels significantly more willing and is notably quieter when cruising or when under load. And the new 10-speed transmission feels refined and responsive, as well. Ten gears might sound like a lot, but the transmission control software is highly intelligent and takes full advantage of the extra choices, oftentimes skipping gears to suit the current situation. Ironically, this 10-speed draws less attention to itself than the six-speed it replaces.

The Ford F-150 was already near the top of the game when it came to livability, but this new engine and transmission have made things even better.

Safety

Standard safety features on all 2017 Ford F-150 models include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, trailer sway control, full-length side curtain airbags and automatic crash notification via paired cell phones.

Ford's MyKey system is standard on the XLT and above. It monitors the vehicle and allows owners to set certain limitations and alerts for valets and teen drivers. Optional safety equipment includes rearview and surround-view cameras, rear parking sensors and several driver aid systems. Those systems include adaptive cruise control with collision mitigation, a forward collision warning system that also pre-charges the brakes for maximum responsiveness, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning and inflatable rear seat belts.

In Edmunds brake testing, current F-150 test vehicles have generally needed 126 to 132 feet to stop from 60 mph, which is about average for the segment.

In government crash tests, the 2017 Ford F-150 received five out of five stars for overall, front- and side-impact protection and four stars for rollover protection. When the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested the F-150, it gave the F-150 a top rating of Good in all tests, including small-overlap front-impact, moderate-overlap front-impact, side-impact, roof strength and head restraints/seats (whiplash protection).

Pro

Diverse four-engine lineup; class-leading payload and tow ratings; highly focused Raptor off-road model; lots of available comfort, convenience and safety tech; excellent crash-test scores.

Con

Aluminum body panels can be more expensive to repair than steel; somewhat stiff ride when bed is empty.

Bottom Line

You won't have any trouble finding a capable pickup that meets your needs in the diverse 2017 Ford F-150 lineup. The F-150 boasts impressive tow and payload ratings and some of the best fuel economy in the light-duty segment. To top it all off, the off-road-ready Raptor model is back and ready to fly over any terrain you put in front of it.
