Nissan Titan XD

The Nissan Titan XD is a full-size pickup truck that neatly bridges the gap between standard light-duty pickups and heavy-duty pickups.

Though it doesn't look it, the Nissan Titan XD is something of a niche vehicle. By official definition, the Titan XD is considered a heavy-duty pickup because it's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is greater than 8,500 pounds. However, in terms of work capabilities, the Titan XD splits the difference between mainstream light-duty pickup trucks and their burly, heavy-duty brothers.

Nissan's big pickup is available in both standard-cab/long-bed and crew-cab/short-bed body styles (although in its debut year it was offered only in the latter style). It comes in a wide range of trim levels that cover all the bases from a basic work truck to a rugged off-road machine to a luxurious tow rig. The Titan XD offers a towing capacity that is greater than your typical standard light-duty pickup's (think Ford F-150 or Chevy Silverado 1500) but less than that of true heavy-duty models (Ford Super Duty, Chevy 2500). That strong work ethic, combined with the Nissan's user-friendly cabin and refined ride quality, could make the Titan XD the just-right choice for those seeking an ideal middle ground.

Current Nissan Titan XD The Nissan Titan XD full-size pickup truck was introduced for the 2016 model year. There is a choice of a standard cab with a long bed (8 feet 2 inches) and a crew cab with a standard bed (6 feet 6 inches). Up to five trim levels (depending on body style) constitute the lineup: S, SV, Pro-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve. The base S is a no-frills work truck, though it still counts air-conditioning, power windows and cruise control among its standard features. Added highlights of the SV include power mirrors, satellite radio and smartphone app integration. The rugged Pro-4X features an off-road-tuned suspension, all-terrain tires and a locking rear differential. The SL goes the upscale route with 20-inch wheels, added chrome accents and leather upholstery. The ultra-fancy Platinum Reserve piles on the luxury with dark chrome exterior accents, upgraded two-tone upholstery, and heated and cooled seats.

Two engines are offered on the Titan XD: a 5.6-liter gas V8 (390 horsepower, 394 pound-feet of torque) and a 5.0-liter turbocharged diesel V8 (310 hp and 555 lb-ft). The gas engine runs through a seven-speed automatic; the diesel uses a six-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) are available for all trims except the Pro-4X, which is 4WD-only.

In reviews, the Nissan Titan XD scored points for its roomy and comfortable seating, logical control layout, supple ride and confident demeanor on the open highway. If the truck is unladen, the gas engine has the edge in performance since it furnishes satisfyingly crisp and more authoritative acceleration, both while driving around town at lower speeds and while passing and merging at freeway speeds. But the diesel, with its greater low-end torque output, would be the go-to choice if you're planning on a fairly regular regimen of more serious hauling and towing duties.

Used Nissan Titan XD As an all-new vehicle for 2016, there have been few changes to the lineup. Most notable is the fact that 2016 models were only available in the crew-cab body style. Regular cab and King Cab models weren't added until the 2017 model year.
