The Volvo V60 is the car that brought wagons back to Volvo. Sleek, sporting and safe, the Volvo V60 is a great alternative to mainstream SUVs.
In some ways, the Volvo V60 harks back to the smart, safe station wagons on which the Swedish automaker built its reputation. But in other ways, the V60 couldn't be any more different from those old 240-series battle tanks if it tried. Svelte, smooth, and seriously Scandinavian, the V60 is a handsome alternative to the compact SUVs that are so popular in today's marketplace.
Though it's only been on the market for a few years, the V60 is one of Volvo's older designs, so it doesn't have the advanced cabin environment found in the 90-series models and the new XC60, with their tablet-style touchscreen and minimal use of buttons. Still, we like the V60's interior with its climate control pictographic, digital dashboard and comfortable front seats. Performance is another strong point: Both engines have plenty of power, and the chassis feels very athletic.
Current Volvo V60 The Volvo V60 is sold in five trim levels: T5, T5 Premier, T5 Dynamic, T5 Platinum and T6 AWD R-Design. The basic T5 model is well equipped with features such as a sunroof, simulated leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats, with the T5 Premier adding real leather, navigation, and a few other goodies. From here, the model line splits three ways: The Dynamic adds an element of sportiness with more deeply bolstered front seats and paddle shifters, while the Platinum — which also builds off the Premier trim — adds an upgraded stereo and many of the features included in option packages for lesser models, including advanced safety aids. The T6 AWD R-Design has a more powerful engine, all-wheel drive and a sport-tuned suspension.
T5 models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine tuned for 250 horsepower, while T6 AWD R-Design models get a turbocharged and supercharged version of this engine good for 302 hp.
There's a lot we like about driving the V60. Both T5 and T6 engines provide plenty of power, and the suspension does a great job of balancing comfort and agility. We also like the comfortable front seats. Just be aware that models with the sport suspension and larger wheels do ride more firmly, which might not be to everyone's tastes.
Backseat space is tight in the V60, a trade-off for its tidy dimensions, and cargo capacity is more like a compact SUV's rather than a big wagon's. But overall we think the Volvo V60 is a sensible, stylish pick for a small luxury wagon.
Used Volvo V60 Models The V60 debuted for the 2015 model year. In that first year, the T5 AWD had a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder (250 hp) and the T6 AWD R-Design featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder (325 hp). Volvo dropped the five-cylinder engine for 2016 and gradually replaced the six-cylinder with the current turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine midway through the year.
